New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi on Sunday chose continuity over radical change, reposing confidence in top lieutenants Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, S Jaishankar and Piyush Goyal for the Union Cabinet. Key allies Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) secured one cabinet post each as Narendra Damodardas Modi took over as prime minister for the third consecutive term, where he will lead a coalition government.
Apart from TDP and JD(U), the National Democratic Alliance has also appointed members of Janata Dal (Secular), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Lok Janshakti Party to the cabinet.
About 9,000 people were expected to attend the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan for Sunday’s event, including politicians, businessmen and celebrities. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud (D.Y. Chandrachud), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar were present in the program.
Among the top ministers who remained in the cabinet, Goyal contested and won the Mumbai (North) constituency for the first time, while Sitharaman and Jaishankar did not contest and are members of the Rajya Sabha.
The party’s two former chief ministers – Madhya Pradesh’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Haryana’s Manohar Lal Khattar – have also strengthened the new cabinet, which also sees the return of BJP president J.P. Nadda. Nadda’s new role has also opened up the post of new president for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the country’s largest party despite losing majority in the latest Lok Sabha elections.
