A 70-hour workweek has been proposed by the Karnataka Government, and it is most likely going to cut off holidays, extra leaves, will increase daily work hours, and overtime limits.

The youth from all over India are reacting on social media, invoking Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. Reportedly, the state bodies are willing to make amendments to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. 1961 and the corresponding rules of 1963. This will increase the working hours by easing out the working hours restriction i.e. working hours from 9 to 10, and overtime up to 12 hours in a day.

These revisions by the Karnataka government are also going to raise the three-month cap on overtime work from 50 hours to 144 hours.

Youth humorously cranked memes on the proposal. One wrote on x ‘they should call it Narayan Murty hours’ and another individual wrote with induced sarcasm” He (Narayana Mutrhy) must be on board”.

While it is all fun and sarcasm on the Internet now; this is an issue that will be followed by serious discussions, criticism and arguments in the near future. Critical arguments and disagreements have already started flowing in.
