DU Admission 2022: Science seats are vacant in many colleges; officials say blaming delay in admissions

The colleges are expected to fill up some of the vacancies by the third round. Students have time till Tuesday to accept their seats after the university released the third list of seat allotment on Sunday.

Even as the DU admission 2022 process reaches the third round of seat distribution, seats are still open in several science subjects, especially in south and off-campus Delhi University colleges.

The vacancies were attributed by college presidents to hold-ups in the admissions process. He said that since science students can also choose commerce courses, they have more options.

The colleges are expected to fill up some of the vacancies by the third round. Students have time till Tuesday to accept their seats after the university released the third list of seat allotment on Sunday. More than 61,500 students had applied for admission to the university at the conclusion of the second round of allocations. In the third round, 16,231 seats for undergraduate programmes were distributed.

As of Monday, at 7 pm, 9,504 students had accepted the college and their assigned courses.

In the departments of arts and commerce at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, all but one of the seats have been filled. However, in science courses, the number of seats available was still in double digits.

According to the college’s principal, Hem Chand Jain, as of 3 pm, 748 students had confirmed their enrollment by paying the fees for the 912 seats that had been approved for the institution.

According to Jain, all of the seats in the arts and commerce departments have already been taken.

“We are facing problems in filling seats in science courses even in the third round. However, we are hopeful that the majority of seats will be filled in this round,” he said.

At Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, 14 seats are open for Botany BSc (Hons) courses, 10 for Computer Science, 14 for Electronics, 19 for Mathematics, and 22 for Physics. Additionally, there are eight and twelve open seats in zoology and life sciences, respectively.

The majority of vacancies at Rajdhani College, an off-campus institution, are in Sanskrit and science courses including Chemistry, Physics, and Electronics.

As of Monday night, 900 of the college’s 1,192 authorised seats had been filled.

“Seats in science courses are still vacant. We are hopeful that it will be filled by the end of the third list and bring stability,” Principal Rajesh Giri told PTI.

“Every year, the situation is the same. Science courses are always filled late. Science students have a lot of choices as they can take admission into many commerce courses as well,” he added.

Colleges at North Campus, like Miranda House, have asserted that they do not have any openings

The college has 1,297 authorised seats, yet 1,375 students have been admitted so far.

Principal B Nanda said, “Majority of seats across courses have already been filled. Even the seats in science courses are not vacant.”

She does, however, acknowledge that this year’s admissions process was delayed, which made it difficult to fill seats in science classes.

“The science students might have already taken admission into engineering or medical colleges. Our DU admission 2022 process started in September, which is late,” Nanda added.
