A circular issued by the NTA on Monday (January 13, 2024) said that the new exam date will be announced later.

UGC-NET Exam: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to postpone the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) scheduled to be held on January 15 (Wednesday) due to Pongal, Makar Sankranti and other festivals.

A circular issued by the NTA on Monday (January 13, 2024) said that the new exam date will be announced later. The NTA said it had received representations seeking postponement of the UGC-NET December 2024 exam and has decided to accept the request in the interest of candidates.

“The examination scheduled to be held on January 16, 2025 will be conducted as per the earlier schedule,” the NTA circular said, advising candidates to check the NTA website for the latest updates.

In its representation to the UGC, the Students Federation of India had said that the scheduled dates, particularly January 13 and 16, coincided with festivals such as Sankranti, Pongal, and Makara Pongal, which are widely celebrated in several south Indian States. We highly recommend that the UGC consider the cultural and practical implications for students from these areas.

We request an immediate rescheduling of the examinations to more suitable dates and thereby uphold inclusivity for all candidates,” SFI leaders Mayukh Biswas and V.P. Sanu said in the representation. The NET is conducted twice a year for the award of a Junior Research Fellowship, appointment as Assistant Professor and for admission to PhD in 85 subjects.
