Tamil Nadu Government Plans to Include Education in Exams

Tamil Nadu: In the state’s state board schools, students in Classes VI through IX will no longer be graded on how well they can recall their lessons, but rather on how well they can comprehend them. More than 1,000 instructors from around the state contributed 1.5 lakh questions to the school education department for this. The goal is to compile a database of 10 lakh questions across all topics.

Students’ higher order thinking skills will be put to the test by the application-based questions. Formative assessments, class level tests, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual exams will all include a departure from rote learning. According to the examinations, a teacher can modify the questions.

The question papers can be customized to meet the learning levels of the youngsters, from class leaders to slow learners, according to a department of education official.

While class tests or exams will have both MCQs and descriptive type questions, formative evaluations will be based on online multiple choice questions (MCQs). Pen and paper will be used to administer the tests.

Students in Tamil Nadu government schools in the following 10 districts: Chennai, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Salem, Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, and Trichy will receive the revised pattern of questions for this year’s annual test as part of a pilot trial.

From Class VI onward, the use of original questions will aid students in better comprehending ideas and how they are applied. They would be able to succeed in competitive tests like the NEET and JEE, the source continued.

Only about 5% of the questions on the Class X and XII board exams at the moment are application based. There will be at least 10% of these questions for Class VI to start with, according to the proposal. There can be more application-focused questions in higher classes.
