National-Education Day 11th November: Significance, Theme, and History

In India, every year on 11th November, National-Education Day is celebrated. It was started in 2008  to commemorate the birth anniversary of Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister Maulana.

Azad plays a crucial role in shaping the education system of the country. Also, develop the educational ground for higher education and scientific research. Azad helped establish a number of institutions, including the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Secondary Education Commission.

During his presidency, institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Kharagpur were founded. Additionally, he was in charge of founding the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Sahitya Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Therefore, to honor his efforts in shaping the educational system the Ministry Human Resources of Development, now Ministry of Education 2008 remarked 11th November as National Education Day.

National-Education Day 2022: Theme

The Ministry of Education focuses on different areas every year for Education Day. These themes are selected based on keeping in mind the target education in the country and the progress to develop in the sector.

The theme selected for National Education Day 2022 is “Changing Course, Transforming Education.” It indicates the need for education reformation and making it more adaptable to the current times.

The objective of celebrating National Education Day 2022 is Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad’s birth anniversary. It is celebrated to improve the education quality in the country and also make the people look back at the contribution of Azad in laying down the foundation of education in the independent country.

National Education Day: History

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad is honored with National Education Day. His contribution to the fight for freedom as a trailblazing thinker and intellectual is motivating. He strived to foster social brotherhood and was passionate about the field of education. Here know about the history of the day:

Know who was Abdul Kalam Azad

– India’s first Education Minister from 15 August 1947 – 2 February 1958.

–Established the best educational institute in the country

– Believed in Socialism and Secularism, also contributed to the Indian Independence Movement

– Rewarded the posthumous honor of the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Azad’s Contribution to Education Sector

– During his tenure, The UGC, AICTE, the Kharagpur Institute for Higher Education, the University Board of Education, and the Secondary School Board were established.

– Help in the establishment of prestigious institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Kharagpur.

– Sahitya Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sangeet Natak Academy, and the Scientific and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) were also established.

While serving as the chairman of the Central Advisory Board of Education. Azad promoted adult literacy, universal primary education that was free for all children up to the age of 14, girls’ education, and the diversification of secondary school and vocational training.

Azad believed that schools are the laboratories that develop the future generation of India. He said, “The primary aim of any system is to create balanced minds which cannot be misled.”

Pranab Mukherjee, former president of the country was mentioned due to Azad’s efforts institutions like UGC owe their origin and described Azad as an institute builder. Additionally, he said, “To create socio-religious and cultural inter-linkages in India, he set up a number of institutions – Lalit Kala Academi, Sangeet Natak Academi, and Sahitya Academi.”
