And Round 1 went to Jadeja, the left-arm spinner, who provided excellent support to his fast bowlers, steered the Royals to a winning start this season. From the moment the coin fell in his favour, he barely put a foot wrong. Led by Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger, his pace attack laid the foundation for victory right within the Powerplay.

Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who reached his half-century in a mere 15 deliveries

Chasing a target of 128 runs on a tricky pitch, the Rajasthan team showed absolutely no signs of panic. Spearheading this chase was 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who reached his half-century in a mere 15 deliveries. His explosive innings of 52 runs off just 17 balls, featuring four fours and five sixes, left the Chennai team completely shell-shocked.

Two sixes struck off Noor Ahmad’s bowling served as a clear testament to his continuous progress. Following several setbacks suffered during the first half of the match, it was Suryavanshi’s blistering innings that ultimately forced CSK to their knees.

Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals: Aggressive Strategy Didn’t Work

For Chennai, it was a case of déjà vu. Last season, when they finished at the bottom of the table, most of their struggles stemmed from their batting. This was particularly evident during the Powerplay, where they frequently lost wickets and were subsequently forced to play catch-up.

The CSK management identified this issue and implemented comprehensive changes, bringing in batsmen who demonstrate clear intent in the top and middle orders. They lacked the benefit of past experience in these specific conditions; however, as Head Coach Stephen Fleming noted, had the pitch remained batting-friendly, they would have had their bases well covered.

Instead, in Guwahati, they encountered conditions unlike any they had faced so far this season. Most T20 teams would hardly relish playing on a pitch that, due to recent rainfall, had remained under covers for the preceding few days. A red-soil pitch, especially one retaining a hint of grass, is invariably the kind that pacers adore. And with Archer and Burger featuring in the playing XI, Riyan Parag had absolutely no hesitation in putting CSK in to bat first.
