New Delhi: The Congress party on Friday questioned the Centre’s approach to the caste enumeration in the upcoming census. The party stated that the decision not to provide a pre-prepared list of castes for people to choose from raises “serious doubts” about the government’s intentions. The party also alleged that there was no consultation with political parties regarding the questionnaire.
Jairam Ramesh, General Secretary in charge of the Congress Party’s communications department, said it was expected that the caste-related question would include a state-wise list of castes, similar to the caste surveys conducted in Bihar and Telangana, allowing people to select the correct option. In a post on ‘X’, Ramesh said, “Unfortunately, this did not happen, raising serious doubts about the government’s intentions.”

General Secretary in charge of the Congress party’s communications department Jairam Ramesh also shared the letter written by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 5, 2025, regarding the caste census issue, noting that Mallikarjun Kharge’s “primary and fundamental suggestion” had been ignored.
Mallikarjun Kharge had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last May concerning the government’s decision on the caste census. He had urged the government to adopt the Telangana model and to hold early consultations with all political parties on the matter.
