US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he is seriously considering withdrawing from NATO, as allied nations have failed to support the United States in its ongoing military actions against Iran.

In an interview with Britain’s “Daily Telegraph”, Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on NATO, the Cold War-era alliance, describing it as a “paper tiger.” According to the report, he remarked that withdrawing the US from this defense pact is now “beyond reconsideration.” He further added that he has long harboured doubts regarding NATO’s credibility.

Donald Trump: Trump Told the Newspaper When Asked Whether he Would Reconsider US Membership

“Oh yes, I would say it is beyond reconsideration,” Trump told the newspaper when asked whether he would reconsider US membership in the alliance following this conflict. The President stated, “I have never been impressed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and, by the way, Putin knows this too.”

Interestingly, these remarks come at a time when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in an address to the nation, declared that the UK would not get involved in any war. “This is not our war; we will not get involved,” he stated, thereby clearly underscoring Britain’s refusal to participate in this conflict.

NATO allies, including European nations such as Germany, France, and Spain, have resisted Trump’s requests for military assistance in the US-Israel conflict against Iran, particularly regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Member nations have expressed concerns about becoming embroiled in a conflict that is “not Europe’s war.” Trump has publicly criticised European nations for their refusal to stand united against Iran, labelling them “cowards.”
