Times Higher Education Rankings 2024; IISc Ranked Best in India

India's top university, the Indian Institute of Science, is back in the global top 250, falling in the 201-250 band.

For the first time, a record-breaking number of Indian universities feature in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. India’s top university, the Indian Institute of Science, is back in the global top 250, falling in the 201-250 band. For the first time since 2017, in the largest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The second highest ranked universities in India are Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, all in the 501-600 band.

Indian universities improve rankings

Indian universities made significant gains this year, including the country’s top five universities. IISc rose to 201-250 from 251-300 band last year, Anna University rose to 501-600 from 801-1000 band last year, Aligarh Muslim University rose to 601-80 from 801-1000 band last year, and Bharathiar university moved from the 801-1000 band to 601-800 last year. Furthermore, Malaviya National Institute of Technology entered the ranking for the first time in the 601-800 band.

Two IITs, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, moved up two bands to join the world’s top 800 universities, from 1001-1200 to 601-800.

This year 91 Indian institutions are included in the list. In the 20th year of the ranking, 1,904 universities from 108 countries and territories up from 1,799 last year are ranked.

Times Higher Education (THE) ranking 2024 is the most comprehensive, rigorous and balanced global ranking that assesses research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators covering their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation.

 “India has well and truly embraced the international agenda and international competition, with an unprecedented 91 universities this year making it into the rigorous and demanding Times Higher Education World University Rankings – making India now the fourth best-represented country in the ranking.
