Open AI has launched an experimental service, 1-800-ChatGPT, that brings the popular chatbot to WhatsApp Apk. The move is aimed at making AI chatbots more accessible to people without requiring a dedicated account or app. Interestingly, Meta has already integrated Meta AI into WhatsApp.
Users in the US and Canada can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to speak to the AI directly, while WhatsApp users in supported countries can send a message to the same number for text-based conversations.
CMI Times checked out the chatbot in India and though we couldn’t add ChatGPT via phone number, it does work with the QR code on OpenAI’s help page. However, ChatGPT won’t initiate communication; users will have to initiate the conversation. OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence (AI) research organization.
How will it work?
The service includes a free usage limit of 15 minutes per month for phone calls and a daily limit for WhatsApp Apk messages. OpenAI said it may adjust these limits based on system capacity. Notifications will alert users when they are approaching their monthly or daily usage limit. “We notify you when you are approaching the limit and notify you when the limit is reached,” OpenAI said.
Does it support only text messages?
On WhatsApp, the AI currently only supports text conversations. Features such as logging into a ChatGPT account, searching, chatting with images, and using personal settings such as memories or custom instructions are not yet available. Additionally, users cannot add ChatGPT to group chats, retaining its functionality for one-on-one conversations only.
The knowledge base for ChatGPT on WhatsApp is limited to October 2023, so the AI cannot address events or updates beyond that date. Despite being limited in some features, the new service makes ChatGPT more accessible, and reaches a wider audience. More importantly, it also gives WhatsApp users the option of Meta AI.
