The Supreme Court of India heard a case related to the accommodation of around 20,000 MBBS-Students who had to return to India due to the Ukraine war. The bench allowed six more weeks to the expert committee to find a workable solution for these MBBS-Students during the hearing.
A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath heard the case. According to Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who is speaking for the Centre, an expert committee has been set up to look after the accommodation of these students.
Speaking to the bench, the ASG said that the committee has already met once. She said the expert committee also wanted to consult the states, especially for final year MBBS students, and urged the court to grant more time of six weeks.
In December, the central government was directed by the Supreme Court to set up a committee to find a solution for Indian students who returned home as a result of the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The Supreme Court ruled that a solution needs to be found soon as these students can prove to be a national asset, especially at a time when the country is facing a shortage of doctors.
The court then adjourned the hearing and announced that it would abide by any recommendations made by the expert group.
The top court said that medical education cannot be compromised and whatever the expert committee suggests, it will go by it.
