Higher Studies in 2024: As per the information provided by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI), more than 7.6 Lakh Indians went abroad for pursuing higher education abroad in 2024. This information was presented to the Lok Sabha on Monday by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in response to question from MP P. Chikkamuni Mohan (PC Mohan). He clarified that the Ministry of Education does not keep a direct record of students who studying overseas, the BOI statistics indicate a slight decrease compared to 2023.
Official records reveal that over 2.6 Lakh students traveled abroad for their studies in 2020, a number that rose to 4.45 Lakh in 2021, 7.52 Lakh in 2022, and reached a peak of approximately 8.95Lakh in 2023, before experiencing a minor decline to 7.6 Lakh in 2024.
The minister said several steps have been taken to ease student mobility, including by facilitating migration through visa processes, academic accreditation and Mutual Recognition of Qualifications (MRQ) and Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreements with other countries.
