World Chess Championship: D Gukesh Becomes Youngest-ever Champ; Historic Win vs China’s Ding Liren

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced via X that Gukesh has now become "the YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION in history."

Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh, aged 18, secured the World Chess Championship title on Thursday by defeating the reigning champion, Ding Liren, in Singapore. This triumph was secured with his victory in the final classical game of the match.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced via X that Gukesh has now become “the YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION in history.” This momentous occasion followed Ding’s resignation during a tense endgame that many had expected to end in a draw.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Gukesh was seen in tears, covering his face with his hands as he absorbed the significance of his new title.

Gukesh achieved the title of the 18th world champion at the age of 18, making him four years younger than Garry Kasparov, who had held the record for the youngest world champion since 1985 when he triumphed over Anatoly Karpov.

Gukesh secured his victory in the decisive game while playing with the black pieces, as Liren faltered under the mounting pressure. Despite being in a favorable position that could have led to a tie-breaker, Liren ultimately collapsed, resulting in a World Chess Championship final score of 6.5-7.5.
