West Bengal Board of Secondary Education Update: The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) on Monday requested the Supreme Court to “modify” its recent decision that cancelled over 25,000 school posts, according to a senior education department official.
In the appeal to the apex court, the WBBSE board’s counsel urged the apex court to allow untainted candidates to continue in service till the end of the academic year or till the process of fresh appointments to such posts is completed, “whichever is earlier,” the source said.
The WBBSE submitted before the apex court that 11.3 per cent of the existing teachers are to be eliminated following the verdict, which will have a devastating impact in the state’s schools. A total of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff of state-run and aided schools lost their jobs after the Supreme Court found large-scale irregularities in the 2016 recruitment process and cancelled the entire panel on April 3.
The persons who lost their jobs said their situation arose due to the failure of the School Service Commission (SSC) to distinguish between candidates who obtained the job through dishonest means and those who obtained it legitimately.
