SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey’s Educational Journey: Punjab University Alumnus, MBA from UK

He will replace Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term ended on February 28, 2025.

SEBI Chairman: 1987 Odisha cadre veteran Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the 11th chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He replaced Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term ended on February 28, 2025.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey: Educational Journey

Born in 1965, Tuhin Kanta Pandey did his post-graduation in economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, followed by an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK). Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh did his post-graduation in the same subject from Punjab University.

After passing the UPSC, he worked in various positions, including working as the Collector and District Magistrate of Sambalpur district. Tuhin Kanta Pandey was also deputed to the regional office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey Professional Background:

I) Finance Secretary: Prior to his appointment to SEBI, Pandey was serving as the Finance Secretary of India, a position he assumed in September 2024.

II) Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM): As Secretary of DIPAM, Pandey played a key role in major disinvestment initiatives, most notably overseeing the strategic sale of Air India.

Other Roles:

Throughout his career, Tuhin Kanta Pandey has held important positions at both the central and state government levels, including serving as District Collector in Sambalpur, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, and Joint Secretary in the Planning Commission.

Vision for SEBI: On assuming office on March 1, 2025, Tuhin Kanta Pandey emphasised the importance of “trust, transparency, teamwork and technology” as the foundational pillars for SEBI’s operations. His goal is to maintain and enhance SEBI’s global reputation by strengthening market regulation and investor protection mechanisms. Challenges Ahead:

Tuhin Kanta Pandey’s leadership comes at a critical time for India’s capital markets, characterised by market volatility and significant foreign investor movements. His extensive experience in finance, privatisation and economic policy is expected to be instrumental in addressing these challenges and shaping SEBI’s future trajectory.
