QS World University Rankings 2026: After eight years, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has achieved the status of the top ranked Indian institution in the QS World University Rankings 2026, overtaking Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), which had held the top position among the Indian institutions in six editions of QS World University rankings over the last ten years.
IIT Delhi, ranked 123rd this year, has jumped 27 ranks from last year’s 150th position. In contrast, IIT Bombay has dropped 11 ranks to 129th. So far, no Indian institute has made it to the global top 100 in these rankings, with IIT Bombay’s 118th position last year being the closest the country’s institutes have come to that mark.
Worldwide, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has secured the top position for the 14th consecutive year, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford University, the University of Oxford, and Harvard University. Regarding the total number of institutions and those included in the overall ranking, India holds the fourth position (54), trailing behind the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and China (72).
