Students of Ashoka-University in Sonipat have expressed their support for Associate Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who was arrested by the Haryana Police on Sunday. Following his arrest, two FIRs were filed accusing him of endangering the sovereignty and integrity of the country through his comments on social media on Operation Sindoor.
On Sunday, the faculty association at Ashoka-University expressed strong disapproval of the arrest of Ali Khan Mahmudabad, calling for his immediate release. They characterized the arrest as a significant infringement on academic freedom and the very principles he has imparted to them. In a statement released on Monday, the students enrolled in the ‘Bhagao Kavi Ko’ course declared their unwavering support and solidarity with their professor, Ali Khan Mahmudabad.
“Throughout the course, Professor Khan lectured on love, constantly emphasizing secular values such as reason, compassion, justice and freedom of thought, which are the basis for meaningful dialogue. His wrongful arrest is a violation not only of academic freedom, but also of the principles he taught us and stood for,” the students said, adding that Mahmudabad emphasized the power of the written word and encouraged them to speak out.
