Prime Minister Narendra Modi Arrives in UK: What’s on the Agenda?

The formal signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK will be the highlight of PM Modi’s visit. He will hold a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and discuss bilateral ties between the two countries.

The agreement was finalised on May 6 and will reportedly be signed by India and UK Commerce Ministers Piyush Goyal and Jonathan Reynolds, respectively.

This FTA will prove to be quite helpful for India in terms of tariffs, as 99 per cent of Indian exports are likely to benefit from tariffs. Under this trade agreement, it will also become easier for British companies to export whisky, cars, and other products to India.

People familiar with the matter had earlier reported that in the UK, PM Modi will be hosted by Starmer at Chequers, the residence of the British Prime Minister, located 50 km northwest of London.

The aim of the PM’s visit is to review the progress of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between India and the UK. Trade and economy, technology, defence, climate, health, and education will be some of the key areas.

Besides this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also meet King Charles III, before departing on his visit to the Maldives on July 25-26.
