Delhi Assembly Election 2025: The stage is set for a thrilling triangular contest that will not only shape the future of the capital but also determine the political fortunes of its three main contenders. Over 1.5 crore eligible voters will get a chance to choose their representatives for the 70-member Delhi Assembly from among 699 candidates – 603 men, 95 women and one third gender person – who have campaigned vigorously over the past two weeks.

Polling booths will open at 7 am and voting will continue till 6 pm. The last two assembly elections were one-sided, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) winning two big mandates. The BJP could barely make its presence felt in the assembly and the Congress was almost wiped out. In 2015, the AAP returned home with a 54.6% vote share and a record 67 seats, while the remaining three went to the BJP. AAP’s vote share and seats fell marginally to 53.6% and 62 respectively in the 2020 assembly elections. The BJP won the remaining eight seats and the Congress once again failed to open its account.

Delhi Assembly Election 2025: Close Contest on Several Seats

All the three political parties are once again in the electoral battle and have left no stone unturned to woo voters. Most of the promises made in their election manifestos are similar. This time, there is going to be a close contest on several seats. AAP chief and former CM Arvind Kejriwal is facing a tough challenge from BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dixit, who are former MPs from different constituencies in different years, while CM Atishi is pitted against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, another former MP, and Congress’ Alka Lamba.

As the city votes today, several contests will be closely watched, including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has moved from Patparganj to Jangpura, where BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Congress’ Farhad Suri are his two main rivals. In Ballimaran, there is a close contest between Congress veteran and former minister Haroon Yusuf and AAP’s sitting minister Imran Hussain. Greater Kailash, Malviya Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Mangolpuri, Patparganj and Matia Mahal are some other seats which are quite important this time.

Delhi Assembly Election 2025; Parties Promises

The AAP has promised several new welfare schemes, which it claims will help families make huge savings. It has showcased free electricity and water to frugal consumers and free travel for women in public buses as some of its schemes that have helped each family save around Rs 25,000 monthly, along with “good education and health”. The party has also claimed that a monthly honorarium of Rs 2,100 for eligible women, free treatment for senior citizens and free travel for students in buses will lead to additional savings of Rs 10,000.

Promising to continue the schemes being run by the AAP-led Delhi government, the BJP – which has not won a single assembly election in Delhi since 1993 – has promised to give a monthly honorarium of Rs 2,500 to women, implement the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme for senior citizens, monthly pension for small traders and entrepreneurs, paid internships for the youth and gas cylinders for Rs 500 for the poor, besides increasing pension for senior citizens.

For the Congress, it is a matter of survival and staying relevant in the city’s politics. Its campaign was aimed at snatching at least a part of its vote bank from the AAP. The party has assured Rs 8,500 per month for a year to the unemployed; Rs 2,500 per month for women under the ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana’; insurance cover of Rs 25 lakh every year; and zero bills for consumers using up to 300 units if it comes to power.
