NMC re-opens Application Window for Setting up New Medical Colleges

Stakeholders can apply for establishment of new medical college and increase in MBBS seats on the official website nmc.org.in till November 26.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reopened the application window for setting up new medical colleges and increasing MBBS seats. The decision to reopen the window comes after the Commission withdrew its order setting the limit of medical seats per state. Stakeholders can apply for establishment of new medical college and increase in MBBS seats on the official website nmc.org.in till November 26.

Only those colleges and institutions which could not apply for establishment of new medical colleges or increase in MBBS seats due to the condition of 100 MBBS seats per 1 million (10 lakh) population will be able to apply through this window. However, such colleges will also have to fulfill other conditions, the commission said.

Reiterating that the Board of Undergraduate Medical Education, National Medical Commission (NMC) has re-examined the provisions of the ratio of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population in the States and conveyed a decision that under Chapter-1 objective section of “Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses under Establishment of New Medical Institutions, Starting of New Medical Courses, Increase of Seats for Existing Courses and Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023” (notified by UGMEB on 16th August, 2023) will be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year, NMC has reopened the NMC portal to set up new medical college and increase of the number in MBBS seats in an existing medical college.

The NMC had also said that hospitals should have at least 220 beds and should be within a maximum travel time of 30 minutes to the medical college.
