Indian Armed Forces Flag Day 2024: Historical Overview
The initiative to establish an Armed Forces Flag Day originated on August 28, 1949, through a committee formed under the auspices of the then Defence Minister of India. This observance was instituted to honour the courageous soldiers, sailors, and airmen who have sacrificed their lives, as well as to foster unity among citizens.
Additionally, the annual event aims to facilitate the resettlement and rehabilitation of war victims and to promote the welfare of ex-servicemen. Subsequently, in 1993, the Defence Ministry of India consolidated various welfare funds, including the Kendriya Sainik Board Fund and those designated for war victims, into a unified fund known as the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).
The primary aim of the Armed Forces Flag Day is to collect contributions from the public to enhance the welfare of Armed Forces personnel through the distribution of symbolic flags, badges, and stickers.
The day not only commemorates the sacrifices made by soldiers currently serving or who have served in the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, and other military branches, but it also creats a significant impact by promoting the well-being of both the soldiers and their families.
On this occasion, it is regarded as the ethical duty of every citizen to contribute to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF). The resources collected are allocated to provide financial support to the widows of fallen soldiers, underprivileged veterans, their dependents, and the organizations dedicated to their rehabilitation.
