Mourners in India’s capital gathered on Saturday to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh ahead of the funeral of the leader who played a key role in the country’s economic liberalisation. Dr Manmohan Singh, who held office from 2004 to 2014, died on Thursday at the age of 92, following which seven days of state mourning were declared.
His coffin, adorned with floral garlands, was taken to the Congress party headquarters in New Delhi with a guard of honour. It will later be taken to the capital for cremation with full state honours with a guard of soldiers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to attend the funeral along with other leaders, described Singh as one of India’s “most iconic leaders”.
Rahul Gandhi, the opposition Congress leader, said that he has lost “a mentor and guide,” noting that Dr Manmohan Singh had “governed India with great wisdom and integrity.”
The former prime minister was an modest technocrat recognized for managing an economic an economic boom in his first term.
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, called to Dr Manmohan Singh as a “genuine statesman,” asserting that he has laid the groundwork for significant advancements that will enhance the relationship between our nations and benefit the global community for future generations.
