Imperial College London to Open Global Hub in Bengaluru

Imperial College London has announced that the Bengaluru Hub will act as a liaison office, providing a platform for collaborative research partnerships

Imperial College London will establish an international hub for research in Bengaluru called ‘Imperial Global India’. The initiative, scheduled to open in May 2025, aims to increase scientific, educational and innovation ties between India and the United Kingdom.

Imperial College London has announced that the Bengaluru Hub will act as a liaison office, providing a platform for collaborative research partnerships between Imperial College and leading academic and research institutions in India.

It will also serve as a bridge for collaboration across government, industry and the innovation ecosystem. The initiative builds on the long-standing relationship between Imperial College London and Indian institutions and seeks to promote solutions to shared global challenges. Imperial’s growing presence in India is reflected in its strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, which supports joint projects across a number of scientific disciplines.

Imperial College London: Research Partnership

The Imperial college London has established research partnerships with various institutions, including AIIMS, the IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, as well as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai. Its researchers are collaborating with Indian counterparts to address issues such as antimicrobial resistance, climate change and the development of clean energy technologies.

The move is also aligned with the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, and is expected to support economic growth, sustainable development and improved quality of life on both sides. The new international hub will be led by Professor Sanjeev Gupta and Dr Elena Dieckmann. Professor Gupta, an earth scientist, has worked extensively with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) on studies involving river systems and groundwater depletion.

Dr Dieckmann, whose expertise is in biomaterials and the circular economy, is working with Indian researchers to transform waste solar panels into architectural materials. Both faculty members will spend time in India to foster deeper engagement and partnerships. In particular, the inauguration of International hub “Imperial Global India” is aligned with the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
