Google Lays Off: double down on efficiency. CEO Sundar Pichai indicated at a consensus meeting on Wednesday that manager, director and vice president roles would be cut, multiple news reports said.
A Google spokesperson told Business Insider (A multinational financial and business news website based in New York City) that some of the employees whose positions have been cut will be “shifted to individual contributor roles”, while some others will have “role elimination”.
The Google Lays Off news comes after rapid growth in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-flying rivals such as OpenAI, which has released products that industry experts have said could threaten Google Search, its online search business that accounted for more than 57 per cent of its revenue previous year.
The release sent Google shares up more than four per cent on Wall Street, after the stock rose 3.5 per cent a day earlier following the release of a successful quantum chip.
The latest layoffs are the fourth this year, following cuts of “a few hundred” positions in its global advertising team in January, and an additional 100 positions in its cloud division in June.
By January of the following year, the company had eliminated more than 12,000 positions, representing 6.4 percent of its global workforce.
In an open letter addressed to employees, Mr. Sundar Pichai accepted “full responsibility for the decisions that led us to this point”, while also emphasizing the need to extend past the critical growth phase for the company.
