Best Student Cities: A total of four Indian cities-Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai have featured in this year’s edition of Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) Best Students Cities rankings. The ranking of these cities has also improved and Delhi has moved up by 21 places to reach 111th position and its name is at the top second most affordable city for students.
Bengaluru (also called Bangalore) has jumped 17 places to 130th position and is the seventh most affordable city for students. All four Indian cities feature in the top 30 in terms of affordability Additionally, every city in India ranks in the top 100 for employer activity.
However, none of the Indian cities ranked made the top 100 for student mix, as the internationalization of universities is still in its early stages. Similarly, they do not make the top 100 for desirability, as a relatively small number of international students currently choose India as a study destination.
In 2021-22, the total number of foreign students in Indian institutions was around 46,000, showing a decline of 2 per cent compared to the previous year. These students came from 170 countries, with the top senders being Nepal (28 percent), Afghanistan (7 percent), United States (6 percent), Bangladesh (6 percent), United Arab Emirates (5 percent), and Bhutan (3 percent).
Globally, London retained its position as the world’s best student city for the sixth consecutive edition, followed by Tokyo in second place and Seoul in third place. Munich moved up to fourth place while Melbourne slipped to fifth. Sydney, Paris, Zurich, Berlin and Montreal ranked sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth respectively. China (Mainland) has the highest number of cities, followed by Taiwan with five and India and Indonesia with four each.
