Chandrayaan-3: India is on the Moon! After a 40-day journey starting from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission has landed successfully. The Vikram lander made a soft lunar landing at 6.04 PM IST on August 23.
“The most difficult parts were the launch, landing and capture by the orbit of the Moon, the launch of the lander to descent and the final landing. The lander’s health will be assessed and the rover will come out from Lander in the next few hours, said ISRO chief S Somanath.
With the achievement, India is now the fourth country after United States, Russia and China to land on the moon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO scientists for the success of the mission while speaking immediately after touchdown from South Africa.
Russia’s Roscosmos space agency congratulated India for successfully landing a spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole, days after Moscow’s own mission crashed. “Roscosmos congratulates Indian colleagues on the successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3,” Roscosmos said in a statement. “Exploration of the Moon is important for the whole of humanity, in the future it may become a platform for the deeper mastering of space.”
It is with immense pride as a citizen of our great nation that I witnessed the remarkable landing of Chandrayaan 3 on the moon today. The success of the lunar mission places India in a select group of nations to successfully achieve a landing on the lunar surface. It is all the more significant because India is the only nation to have achieved a lunar landing on the South Pole of the moon. This will herald new avenues in scientific research and discovery. This represents a milestone in the march of the nation. My heartiest congratulations to Team ISRO and the scientific community on this historic achievement. They have made the entire nation proud – Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Professor Anu Ojha OBE, Championing Space Director at the UK Space Agency, said, “Congratulations to India on this amazing feat of engineering and perseverance. The successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 in the southern polar region of the moon is further evidence that we are living in a new space age, with space agencies and companies across the world setting their sights on the Moon and beyond.”
