Assam gets Approval for 12th Medical College to Admit 100 MBBS Students: Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that with the approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start MBBS courses from the academic session 2023-24, the number of medical colleges in the state will increase to 12.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter and termed the development as a historic achievement for the state. He wrote, “Delighted to share that Nalbari Medical College has been recognised by National Medical Commission with an approval to admit 100 MBBS students.”

State Health Minister Keshav Mahanta said in a statement that with the latest approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase to 1,500.

He said that the Assam government has set a target to increase the number of medical colleges in the state to 24 by 2026.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government also informed that there will be an increase of 1300 MBBS seats in government medical colleges and 13 new medical colleges will start their operations from the academic year 2023-24.

Assam is a state in northeastern India south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins. Assamese and Boro are the official languages ​​of Assam, while Bengali is an additional official language in the Barak Valley. Assam is known for Tea and Silk.
