Aligarh Muslim University: Naima Khatoon Gulrez, principal of Aligarh Muslim University’s Women’s College since 2014, has been appointed the first woman vice-chancellor of the university. It is understood that she took charge as the new VC on Monday evening.
The AMU court had shortlisted three candidates for the post and sent the names to President Draupadi Murmu for final selection last November.
The new VC, a PhD in psychology from AMU, was appointed as a lecturer in the same department in 1988, before being promoted to professor in 2006. She remained there before joining as principal of the women’s college in 2014.
She also taught at the National University of Rwanda, Central Africa for one academic year and in October 2015 he was appointed Director of the Center for Skills Development and Career Planning, AMU.
She has authored, co-authored, edited six books and published several papers in journals of national and international repute.
Let us tell you that AMU is the only educational institution in the country, which has the right to elect the Vice Chancellor of its university. The AMU Executive Council had prepared a panel of five candidates out of a total of 20 candidates on 30 October 2023, out of which a panel of three candidates had been prepared by the members of the AMU Court on 6 November 2023, the three named by the AMU Court. The recommendation was sent to the President. Pro. MU Rabbani, Prof. Naima Khatoon, Prof. Faizan Mustafa was sent.
