Government Plans to Introduce Skill-based Learning in Class 11 and 12 Curriculum: Union Minister

The Union Education Minister said that a change in the learning methodology is needed at the appropriate level, and the National Education Policy 2020 recommends this.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said here on Sunday that the government is considering introducing skill-based learning in the curriculum for Classes 11 and 12, in accordance with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020.  The Union Education Minister said that a change in the learning methodology is needed at the appropriate level, and the National Education Policy 2020 recommends this.

“We are in the process of implementing a skill-oriented curriculum for Classes 11 and 12,” he stated during an event at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Elaborating on the idea of incorporating skill-based learning into the curriculum, Minister Pradhan noted that the traditional education system was primarily focused on obtaining certificates and degrees.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi rightly said that we need degrees and certificates, but we also need to empower students,” he said at the Dakshinapath Summit 2025 at IIT Madras. “A significant recommendation of NEP 2020 is the emphasis on skill-based education,” he added.

Union Minister Pradhan said that his ministry is also working on introducing skill-based learning from Class 6 onwards. “Earlier, skill-based learning was optional. Skill-based education was selective. But from now on, skills will be an integral part of education as a subject,” he said.
