Use “Normalised” CUET score not “Percentile” to prepare Merit List, says UGC Chairman

According to Kumar, the marks have been normalised to enable students who took the exam on the same topic on different days or in different shifts with an equal playing field.

CUET UG 2022 results were declared on 15th September 2022, upon which UGC Chairman M Jagnath Kumar shared his thoughts on Friday that all universities will prepare the merit list based on normalise score and not on raw marks or percentile scores. According to Kumar, the marks have been normalised to enable students who took the exam on the same topic on different days or in different shifts with an equal playing field.

“The rank lists will be prepared by universities using normalised NTA scores and not the basis of percentile. The scores have been normalised to provide a level playing field to students since they wrote tests in the same subject on different days,” UGC Chairman M Jagnath Kumar said.

Additionally, he also mentioned that CUET normalised scores should be done individually for each subject for which the exam was conducted on multiple shifts.

Ultimately, a panel comprising professors of reputed universities and institutes such as IIT  Delhi, Delhi University, and Indian Statistical Institute collectively decided on the normalisation formula using CUET equipercentile method.

Senior Director Sadhana Parashar NTA said that the participating institute will draft the merit list based on and students will be counseled individually based on their CUET-UG score cards.

CUET UG exam was conducted to get admission to 91 universities including central universities.

Around 14.90 lakhs students were registered for CUET but only 60% of them appeared in the examination. The exam began on 15th July and stretched its final phase to 30th August.

UGC Chairman M Jagnath Kumar also questioned how to compare the performance of individuals on the common scale without normalisation? Hence, we must ensure that admission should be made upon the score based on the performance of the students.
