School Education Index: States Scores Drop, Grades Intact, Chandigarh Best Performer

School Education Index: Kerala (14th smallest Indian state by area) has retained its grade in the School Education Index. However, its score has declined, according to the recently released Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 report for states and union territories by the Union Ministry of Education. The state, along with nine additional states and union territories, has achieved the grade ‘Prachesta-3’ (which indicates a cumulative score between 31% and 40% of 1,000) for the academic years 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Still, it is one of the 12 states and union territories that have recorded a decline in their scores during this time period. The state’s score was recorded at 601.9 for the year 2022-23; however, it has decreased to 594.2 in the year 2023-24.

Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan improved their scores to reach the Prachesta-3 grade, whereas among the states that maintained this grade, only Kerala experienced a decline in its score by 7.7 points. Chandigarh excelled among PGIs, securing a Prachesta-1 grade in 2023-24. It improved its score from 687.8 in 2022-23 to 703 in 2023-24.

Punjab also significantly improved its performance by 17.1 points from 2022-23, achieving the highest score in this category with 631.2 points. No state reached a score within the range of 761-1,000.
