Medical Seats May Increase: NMC Chief Dr Abhijat Sheth
Concerns have been raised about a drop in the number of medical seats in UG and PG this year after the CBI in July busted a network involving officials of the Union health ministry, the National Medical Commission (NMC), middlemen and representatives of private medical colleges who were allegedly involved in a range of serious offences, including corruption and illegal manipulation of the regulatory framework overseeing medical colleges.
As soon as the CBI investigation began, the NMC stopped increasing the availability of seats and starting new courses. The agency has identified 34 persons in the FIR, including eight health ministry officials, a representative of the National Health Authority, and five doctors associated with the NMC inspection team.
