Indians Deported from US: On February 5, around 104 Indians were sent to Amritsar, India. This is part of the Donald Trump administration’s tough immigration policies and curbing illegal immigration to the US.
While the pictures of the deported Indians in handcuffs were not liked by some opposition leaders, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar termed it as the standard operating procedure (SOP) in the US. It seems there is a difference in the way handcuffing is done in both India and the US.
In the US, the provisions for handcuffing people who have been lawfully arrested are different from the provisions prevalent in India. This may further increase the uproar.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, S. Jaishankar assured the Opposition that India is working with the Donald Trump administration to ensure that the deportees being returned are not subjected to any kind of mistreatment.
Jaishankar confirmed that the male deportees were indeed handcuffed and chained, adding that no restraints were imposed on women and children.
Deportations carried out by the United States are coordinated and carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the standard operating procedure established in 2012 for deportations via plane, there is a stipulation regarding the use of sanctions.
