Fraud in Private Medical Colleges Admissions: The Enforcement Directorate on Monday said that despite “clear” information about “fraud” by the Ministry of External Affairs, authorities in West Bengal and Odisha did not take any action against the admission of ineligible candidates under the NRI quota in certain private medical colleges.

The federal investigation agency has announced that it has seized “incriminating” evidence during previous raids related to the case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED is a law enforcement and economic intelligence agency of the Government of India) informed that fixed deposits worth Rs 6.42 crore of a private medical college in West Bengal have been provisionally seized.

Earlier, Enforcement Directorate had seized assets worth Rs 12.33 crore of specific colleges and individuals involved in these alleged irregularities.

The inquiry has found that the administration of certain private medical colleges providing MBBS, MD, and MS programs in these states colluded with agents to create “fake” documents for applicants, including embassy papers and family trees of NRIs, according to the ED.

Private Medical Colleges: Fake NRI Documents

“These private medical colleges were paying money to consultants or agents for preparing fake NRI documents. The agents contacted unrelated NRIs by paying money and obtained their credentials and used these to prepare fake documents and introduced these NRIs as sponsors of students.”

In some cases, the agents and medical colleges used the same set of NRI sponsor documents for two to three different and unrelated candidates,” the agency said. It said the action was taken to show compliance with the directions laid down by the Supreme Court in relation to the issue.

The investigating agency said, “Despite clear information given by the Ministry of External Affairs about fraud in the cases of some NRI sponsors, the concerned state authorities have not taken any action.”

The agency further said that various Indian Consulates/Embassies abroad have reported that in many cases the NRI certificates of the sponsor, which were used to get admission in these private medical colleges under the NRI quota, are “not genuine”.
