Shiv Nadar Foundation Launches New Law School, Over 40 Students Enrolled in First Batch

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Justice MM Sundresh, Judge of the Supreme Court as the chief guest, Professor Dr. SK Bhattacharya

The latest initiative of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, the Shiv Nadar School of Law was inaugurated recently at the Shiv Nadar University campus in Chennai, which will be a five-year BA.LLB programme for aspiring law aspirants.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Justice MM Sundresh, Judge of the Supreme Court as the chief guest, Professor Dr. SK Bhattacharya, Vice Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, Shikhar Malhotra, Trustee of Shiv Nadar Foundation, Professor Dr. Shiv Swaminathan, Dean of Shiv Nadar School of Law and Professor Dr. Vinay Sitapati, Associate Dean of Shiv Nadar School of Law, among others.

Notably, 45 students have enrolled in the first batch. The institute has also planned a batch of 120 students for the coming year. The Shiv Nadar School of Law also offers scholarships to students including full tuition waiver.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Sundresh highlighted that despite having many law colleges in India, quality legal education is rare, which prevents law students from making a positive contribution to society.

He emphasised that this scenario has to change, as the legal field deals with social issues far more than any other profession. “Those in the legal profession should never forget the basic principle that they exist to serve society and litigants,” Justice Sundresh said.

Prof. Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya expressed happiness at the launch of the Shiv Nadar School of Law in Chennai, which aims to prepare ambitious law students to become world-class lawyers. He told me that the law school “combines a true liberal arts programme with legal studies, and the curriculum is based on global best practices.”

Further, Professor Bhattacharya said that the professors and faculty members are from the best Western universities such as Oxford, Harvard, Yale and Princeton, and one-fifth of the faculty members will be active legal practitioners from both India and other countries.

Trustee Shikhar Malhotra highlighted that Shiv Nadar University Chennai is a hub of intellectual exploration and innovation, and the opening of the Law School is set to develop India’s best legal professionals and scholars.

Professor Sivaprasad Swaminathan said that the Law School will become a beacon of excellence supported by state-of-the-art facilities, global faculty and a student-centric approach.
