News Ukraine Crisis: 5,000 Indian students will return from Romania by Friday: Jyotiraditya Scindia

As part of its efforts to evacuate Indian students stranded in the war-torn region, the Center on Monday decided that Union ministers, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, will travel to Ukraine's neighboring countries to coordinate the evacuation mission and help bring back the students.

News Ukraine Crisis: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday that around 5,000 students will be evacuated from Romania and Moldova in the next two days amid the crisis in Ukraine.

Scindia, who reached Romania in the early hours of Wednesday, said in a virtual press conference, “The students have suffered a lot… In this mission, our goal is to send back home Indians trapped due to Ukraine-Russia tensions.” Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Tuesday, that around 8,000 Indians, mainly students, are stranded in Ukraine.

As part of its efforts to evacuate Indian students stranded in the war-torn region, the Center on Monday decided that Union ministers Hardeep Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and VK Singh will travel to Ukraine’s neighboring countries to coordinate the evacuation mission and bring back student.

Scindia has been asked to take care of the evacuation efforts from Romania and Moldova.

The Union Minister said, “The (evacuation) plan is divided into four parts – bringing the students to the borders, helping them to cross, bringing them to the landing point for the airports and finally taking them safely to India.

Scindia also held a logistics meeting after meeting the students stranded at the airport.

“I met with the ambassador at the embassy for an hour, planning the operational logistics today. Today, six flights departed from Bucharest for India,” he said.

“We have 3,000 students in Bucharest and 1,000 students at the border in Syrette. Roughly, 220 students per flight (about 1,300 students) came back to India today,” he said.

The minister said that he met Prime Minister of Romania Nicolae Ciuca and thanked him for helping to evacuate Indians amid escalating tensions in Ukraine.
